ANNOUNCED TODAY: Google does not use keyword meta tags in search engine results

Google came forward today to announce what many in the search engine optimization business have speculated for some time: that it no longer uses the keyword meta tag in its search ranking.

Matt Cutts, the head of Google's Webspam team, released a blog entry and video today debunking the myth that keyword meta tags were still used in Google's search results.

"To this day, you still see courts mistakenly believe that meta tags occupy a pivotal role in search rankings," Cutts wrote in his Google blog. "We wanted to debunk that misconception, at least as it regards to Google. Google uses over two hundred signals in our web search rankings, but the keywords meta tag is not currently one of them, and I don’t believe it will be."

In the past, meta descriptions and keywords were hugely popular for website SEO. But Google and other search engines began to catch on as companies loaded their meta content with keywords that at times did not pertain to the meta content's respective page. That meta content was considered "spam," and Google began black-listing companies that used it as such.

While they have no value on Google's search engine rankings, keyword meta tags can be used to sort information, and may still be used by some search engines.
